The Queensland Department of Main Roads is undertaking a planning study to identify land for a future road connection to link the Warrego and Cunningham Highways at Dinmore in Ipswich.

Three potential corridor options have been identified. VRSpace was commissioned to develop a virtual reality (VR) model that could be used as a consultation tool with the local community.

The model developed allowed for free navigation to any position within the modelled environment. Additionally, the one model was used to interactively switch between the three options.

During consultation, residents were able to locate their homes within the model and then view each proposed corridor option from their front door.

Aerial view from VR Model over the island town

Background

The Pacific Regional Policing Initiative (PRPI), funding by the Australian and New Zealand Governments and administered by SAGRIC Interntation Pty Ltd operates within all Forum Island Countries:

Cook Islands

Federated States of Micronesia

Fiji

Kiribati

Marshall Islands

Nauru

Niue

Palau

Papua New Guinea

Samoa

Solomon Islands

Tonga

Tuvalu

Vanuatu

The purpose of the PRPI Program is to contribute to improved effectiveness of policing in Forum Island Countries to enable them to contribute more comprehensively to regional security and national economic, social and political stability.

Our Role

The PRPI approached VRSpace with a request to develop an Incident Management Training System suitable for training police officers of the region in incident command/management. The resultant training system includes a generic VR representation of a Pacific Island town and surrounding area.

Included in the model is a Wharf, CBD, Petrol storage facility - close to the CBD, a power station, a prison, and a small airfield. The VR model covers approximately 7.5km by 5.5km including a mountainouse region and river. Trainees are required to manage incidents by requesting appropriate resources - eg. additional police vehicles and personnel, fire brigade, ambulance and/or other appropriate resources for their region. As these resources are requested they will appear in the model at the appropriate locations.

This system can be used for one on one or group training systems.

Princess Alexandra Hospital Station

The busway will provide a significant link in Brisbane’s public infrastructure to improve rail and bus service integration. Once completed, it will be 1,500 metres long and will link:

The South East Busway and Green Bridge

The South East Busway, Park Road Railway Station, and Pricess Alexandra Hospital

Park Road Station and Boggo Road Gaol

VR Space developed a virtual reality (VR) model of the proposed development that supplemented Queensland Transport’s community consultation activities. The model allowed free navigation within the environment and also included a keyboard activated switch to make the terrain transparent. This feature is particularly useful since much of the proposed busway is underground.

Aerial view from VR Model of the Proposed Link

Background

Queensland Transport, in conjunction with engineering consultancy firm ARUP, conducted a feasibility study to investigate pedestrian and cycle route options through the Normanby Fiveways to Roma Street. The study was completed in March 2005.

The aim of the Normanby Pedestrian Cycle Link project is to improve the safety and effectiveness of pedestrian and cyclist connectivity in the following locations.

Between the existing cycleway on the western side of Brisbane Grammar School and Roma Street Parklands.

Between the proposed Normanby Busway Station plaza and Roma Street Parkland.

From the existing footpaths and cycleways surrounding the Normanby Fiveways to enhance cycle opportunities, where practicable.

Our Role

VRSpace has been assisting Queensland Transport with the visualisation of this proposed link. The VR model created by VRSpace has been used to communicate the design intent to stakeholders and the community adjacent to the proposed development. The model has been developed prior to detail design and is a useful tool for evaluating the proposed solution and identifying factors of the design that may require further re-design.
