VR In Policing

VR Space has developed a real-time incident creation tool, the “Incident Engine” to enable police and incident response organisations to train their people in a range of critical event response scenarios under time and event pressure. Our event creation tool provides trainers with complete flexibility to manage an event in real-time so they can be responsive to the actions of the trainee. The feature of this training methodology is the ability to put trainees under time and event pressure.

The Queensland Police Academy utilise the VR Space Incident Engine to implement event and time pressure situations for trainees to respond to. The use of live radios adds to the physiological fidelity and the Police claim it is the most cost effect – high value training delivered at the academy. The system consists of an immersive display system for trainees to be immersed into a scene. A team of role players in the control room can then create an event for the trainee to respond to. E.g. shots fired / offender on the move / etc

The trainers set the scene and then control the environment using a simple user interface to control the placement of resources and triggering of events within the simulation.

Other areas of policing that can benefit from interactive graphics tools include:

• Crime Scene investigation / first response
• Accident scene investigation / first response
• Pursuit decision making & policy development
• Crowd control decision making & policy development
• Inter-agency incident response
